HI
i don't think it is a sixth sense but when I lived in Ca I could hear them coming it was like a loud rolling roaring noise a couple of seconds before they happened. Since hearing is one of our regular senses I don't think it was another alerting me to their coming.

Maybe not a sixth sense, but perhaps an enhanced ability to feel the earthquake before the shakes and tremors that are felt by people. Many people have the ability to feel/or sense things that other cannot, maybe because they are extremely sensitive to external changes. The human body is very complex and even doctors don't exactly understand all of it's functioning and capabilities.

"Animal behavior
Animals can detect the P-wave or ultrasonic wave generated by a big underground explosion or the rupture of an earthquake, even if the waves are too small for humans' senses. These waves travel faster than the Love and Rayleigh earthquake waves that most strongly shake the ground and causes the most damage. When this happens, animals can detect the incoming earthquake wave, and start behaving agitatedly or nervously.

Others postulate that the animal behavior is simply their response to an increase in low-frequency electromagnetic signals. The University of Colorado has demonstrated that electromagnetic activity can be generated by the fracturing of crystalline rock. Such activity occurs in fault lines before earthquakes. According to recent research, electromagnetic sensors yield statistically valid results in predicting earthquakes — modern science's answer to centuries of human observation of animals."

Your answer can only be understood when you drop the idea of there being just 5 senses. The traditional are: Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, Touch.

However psychology now counts many more:
> Thermoception is the sense of heat
> Nociception (physiological pain)
> Equilibrioception, the vestibular sense, is the perception of balance or acceleration
> Proprioception, the kinesthetic sense, is the perception of body awareness

Some animals have hightened awarenss in other then sight and so can feel the movements in th earth or through others.

Some people may have the ability to sense in this way too.

growing up in an earthquake prone place my cats always knew up to half an hour before if there was going to be an earthquake. i think some really sensitive people can have a 6th sense about anything and it's not 'psychic' its just some people have strong instincts and sensitivity than others.

Some people have been known to get queezy and have an upset stomach in the hours preceding an earthquake. Something to do with the energy waves coming out of the earth. I saw it in the movie Phenomenon with John Travolta, and looked it up in a book on strange happenings. Animals are more perceptive to it, but some people can feel it too.

Primates sense earthquakes. It must be one of the things we gave up in our evolution in order to make room for intelligence.

That is an extremely common one. The earth movements affect us so strongly (just like the moon) and this is a sensitive area to the extra sensory awareness.
