I guess going to the salon is the 'right' answer but I never did it that way.
If your hair is naturally black/dark, you can buy hair stripper at a beauty supply store. Ask the person working there for help if you can't figure out which stuff to buy. You get the powered bleach stuff and the bottle of developer, mix the products and apply it to your hair. It strips the color out and your hair gets lighter and lighter while you sit and wait. If you keep it in for too long, it can burn through your hair and pieces will break off (I did that because I feel asleep and left it in for 4 hours). You can strip your hair more than once to get it lighter but you should wait a few days (at least) between each application. I have done it twice in one day but I would NOT recommend that! If you want, you can then buy blond hair dye and use that to even out the color. I never did that because I wanted white hair (I was a teen) but I could never get it that light. I stripped my hair so many times in the course of a year or two that I eventually had to cut it all off (it was almost waist length, I cut it shoulder length) It became very brittle, had a 'sticky' feel to it and I could barely get a brush through it without losing lots of hair.
If your hair is DYED black, you can use the hair stripper to remove the color but your hair will look very orange afterward. You'd then be forced to use the stripper again to try to get the orange out but it may not come out the way you want it too.
Basically, you can try it yourself but it's probably best to have a professional do it.

Let the salon do it. Although not every salon will do it for you. It will need to be stripped, bleached and then coloured. It will almost certaınly ruin the condition. Why not consider highlights.
