The reason why Mary went blind had to do when she was a little girl. She had Scarlett fever. The fever that she had as Little girl did damage to the tissues in her eyes. Charles took Mary to sleepy eye to have her eye's examine. The Dr asked Charles if Mary had any disease that could of damage the nerve tissue in her eyes. Charles told the Dr that Mary had Scarlett fever as a child. That was how Mary went blind. I hope this has answered your question truthfully

Scarlet Fever. Her entire family became very sick from it but she was the only one who had lasting effects.
