I tried mowing the lawn at my new house this weekend. After about 10 minutes, the engine sounded like it was having trouble and it started to sputter and then it died. I started it again and used it for another minute and then it died again. I couldn't figure out why so I wheeled it off to the garage and looked around. When I start the engine, it runs for about 5 to 10 seconds before dying.I thought it might be the old gas since it was from a tank from about a year ago, but then I noticed that the air filter was missing. In reading the manual, it said that you should never run the motor without the air filter. What should I do? Take it in for service somewhere? Is it worth it or should I consider getting another engine or entire new mower? It's only 3 yrs old - Toro Personal Pace.

Oh boy, lets pray that nothing happened. To look for your local Toro dealer, goto http://www.toro.com and use the dealer locator. Ignore any Home Depot listing. Your dealer should be happy to help you and give you advise.

Checklist - A- Remove all the gas and put in fresh new gas with a little dry gas a shot glass or two. B- Check the spark plug and make sure it doesn't have any carbon(black soot) in-between the igniter , if it does buy a new one and make sure it is gapped correctly. Also check the gap on the current plug and make sure it is correct, you should be able to find the gap in the manual from the mower. C- Always change the oil every year, as this may not be the cause, do it anyway. D- Go out and buy that air-filter today and replace it, you are contaminating your engine. E- after all the above is done and you are still having problems check the idle screw on the carb. while it is running adjust it with a Philips screwdriver and see if your idle changes.

If that fails you probably have a carb problem with a gunked out line. With all the fuel removed clear out all the lines that lead to the carb and buy the product the "works" this may help out , but if the carb has any tarnished gas in it, you may have to pull the carb and soak it overnight in Gunk remover. Keep the lawnmower and fix it, you will be proud of yourself when it is done , lawnmowers last a lifetime. I still have my Sears Cratsman that I bought for 125 and it has lasted for 12 years and still going strong.

likely it's not getting fuel more than it not running because of missing air filter...remember though, when mowing you kick up dust and grit which will get sucked into the engine and cylinder walls without a filter in place.
Sand in the cylinder is like taking sandpaper to the inside. The idea is for the surfaces of the cylinder and Piston to slide easily over each other for maximum compression and lubrication. USe a filter and your mower will last for years. Keep the oil at the right level. Your gas line is probably dirty or your spark plug is probably worn out. If your mower runs at all its probably not too late to use a filter, its life has been reduced just like people that smoke.

Probably just needs a good cleaning. They usually can take some abuse.

Do not try and restart is again before it has been cleaned. Any mechanic can do this in about 10 minutes....or less. Probably a handy neighbour would be better than an overhaul at the retailer.

Good luck.
