It's like illiteracy gone mad! Or is everyone just really lazy?

Sorry I'm being mean and calling people stupid or anything. I just think that if the tool to check the spelling is available then why not use it? I can understand that people are at work etc - but it happens an awful lot, and some really silly mistakes are made. It just get my back up.

And I'm not having a go at people to whom English isn't their first language - it's not like I can write an answer in Spanish or French etc.

Maybe because not all the people here are English or American. For some people,English isn't their first language and because that they make different mistakes!
Of course they could check the spelling button but some people don't make only spelling mistakes but they also put words in the wrong order and that can't be resolved by the spelling button!

Well you are being pedantic. If someone can't spell as good as yourself is there any need to brag about it? Some people have problems spelling but it isn't the end of the world. As long as you understand the question I don't see what the problem is.

I think people are just too lazy to make sure they spell right. Nobody takes the proper time for ANYTHING anymore. I agree, they tend to look like illiteracy gone mad.And it's frustrating trying to figure out what is being asked and answered.

You should be grateful someone even wanted to look your way people are probably doing multi tasks so that would explain why the spelling isn't perfect. One more thing this yahoo Q&A is for fun so stop making a big deal for nothing it's not a life or death situation.

Here is the real reason why peoples spelling is so bad. If you were born from lets say 80's till now you had good old spell check in high school. My teachers wanted my Essays typed, doubled spaced. W/that comes good ole spell check. It's everywhere. That's your answer. Makes seance don't it?

(Used spell check, 4 misspelled words) ;-)

I believe it's a combination of a poor school system, poor parenting combined with our fast paced world of communication. In a typical business world it is not uncommon to receive over 100 emails in a day. Add to that text messaging and PDA communication it all comes down to time. The American population is about speed and efficiency. Fast food is not longer a 3 minute hamburger. It's a 1 min hamburger, my way, hot and ready by the time I get to the drive up window. As for "getting over it" or "getting used to it"...why not show someone the benefits and power of good communication.

It's terrible isn't it. Sometimes I feel like mentioning it in my answer but I've done that before and got reported.

Everyones taught to spell at school, and it's not hard to click on 'Check Spelling' I mean my punctuation is appalling but I try.

It's down to texting and always dropping vowels, using abbreviations etc.

Does get a bit annoying when you can't make sense of the question because the spelling and grammar is all over the place!

You're not pedantic at all! Some people feel they distinguish themselves through their appalling orthography, while others just want attention. Some teens feel it is their appointed duty to 'text' whether writing on their cell phone or turning in a semester paper. Some people are just too lazy to give a damn. Others are too stupid to realize their utter insult to our language and culture through their carelessness. We just have to grin, cringe, and bear it!
