You no longer need to be invited to gmail! They've opened it up to everyone everywhere for free. Just go to www.google.com and (it's hard for me to do since I already have one...) I think you will see at the top right the words Personalized Home, which will lead you through the steps of signing up...
You'll be able not only to set up gmail but also lots of other Google stuff, the main one of which is a "personalized home page" (implied above) which can have any of various news items, weather, etc....similar to your my yahoo! page.

A Gmail address (or googlemail in the UK ) can be acquired by going to the sign up page and filling in a few simple questions.

go to google and type in create gmail account. The first site that comes up is mail.google.com/mail/signup
go to that site and its really straight forward. Fill in everything they ask for (Name, desired log in name, password, etc)
When your done you should have yourself a brand new gmail account.

You should go to the gmail web page https://www.gmail.com and press the "Sign up for Gmail" button and fill in the form! It's simple!
