I have recently gotten married and for professional reasons, I need to keep my current last name but would like to add my husband's last name. How do I go about hyphenating, is it a legal process, or do I just submit the marriage certificate and request to keep both names?

I got married 8 months ago and i hyphenated my last name. You have to apply for a name change on your social security card, bring in your current social security card, birth certificate, and marriage certificate. They will send you a new card with your new legal name. Once you have applied for it they will give you a reciept or you can wait for your new to change your drivers liscense. Its so much better to hyphenate your name, you don't have a lot of trouble with other name changes (credit cards, checks) your maiden name is still yours.

Just start using the hyphenated name if you want to do that. I don't think any legal process is necessary. You may want to call the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the county where you married, though, just to make sure.

I'M ONE TO THINK THIS IS PATHETIC!. When you marry your work colleagues expect you to take your husbands name. If anything most people think this is one of the dumbest aspects that alot of women take when they marry.
JUst take your husbands name and forget about the hyphem crap or just keep your maidan name it just looks dumb consider this Hi I'm blah, blah, blah hyphen blah? But really contact your local vital statistics office or social services
center and they should be able to give you the information you require!

The first guy to answer was a jerk! Its up to you what name you want, it is YOUR name. Yes you just need to bring your marriage cert and whatever other identification they require and tell them that you would like to have his name added onto yours. Congrats on the wedding!
