Yes to your question. No to his statement.

If you're married in a Nation recognized by the U.S. (in this case) Government and the marriage is a function of that Nation's civil law or recognized by it's Government you are married.

Example, marriage in Taiwan is only recognized in countries that recognize Taiwan as a nation.

Whether you marry in Canada or the US, your marriage needs to be registered with the appropiate civic authorities. Until your marriage is registered, you are not considered married by either government (there might be exceptions that I'm not aware of).
Once you register your marriage with local authorities, you can request some kind of a paper that attests that you are married (in Canada I believe is called a "Marriage Certificate"). You can use this oficial paper to attest to other governments (countries) that you were married under civic law in the given country.
Do 2x check with the appropriate authorities where you plan to get married. In Canada, marriage law is administered by the provinces, for which reason there might be slight variations of practice and expectations.

No it's not true. You would be legally married. I have lots of friends married here in Canada who live in the U.S. now and are "legally married" or in one case had to file for divorce .... they wouldn't have had to do that if they were not considered legally married.

I am Canadian... and to the best of my knowledge (I have family all over the US and in Canada) you ARE legally married in the US if you are married in Canada. The marriages are just as legally binding as any other place....
You can now officially say "I told ya so".... he he he

If you're a straight couple, you would be married in the US as well. I don't think you have to get married again.

He's either pulling your leg or he doesn't know squat! Once married anywhere in the world, your marriage is valid and recognized in any country!
