Even though I am a die hard cowboys fan and grew up watching Emmit. None of these are the best running back ever. That would have to go to Barry Sanders. He played for a crap team and still managed to gain the yards that he did. The man was amazing and an escape artist. Sadly he only played for 10 seasons because of the Lions. If he would have played for the Cowboys and had the line that Emmit did...there is no question in my mind that he would have the rushing title right now by a huge margin.

Reggie Bush? You can't even compare someone with 1 year experience to Emmit or Payton. Emmit had the luxury on playing on some great teams, Payton only had a short time of that. All around I say Emmit between those two but barely.

I would assume you are referencing the running back position. I have to say Walter Payton because he was a great powerful runner that simply ran over defenders and he has better numbers compared to seasons played. Emmit ran behind a great Dallas line for most of his career. Reggie may become considered "better" out of these three, yet he has not yet proven his consistency and you don't know if he will stay healthy throughout a long career as did the other two referenced backs. I think the best back I ever watched play the game would be Barry Sanders. Look at the big numbers he put up in his short career. Look who he played for,, Detroit Lions with no lines.

Have to be Walter Payton putting up phenomenal numbers with for the most part were some pretty bad Bears teams most of his career. Kind of hard to believe that Reggie is considered a smallish scatback and is the same size as Payton, while Emmit is the heaviest of the bunch.

of those three I'd say payton was the best, then emmit, and reggie isn't even better than the other RB on his team duece Mccalister. However Jim Brown was better than all three of these RB"s so was Oj simpson and Barry Sanders. Jim Brown being the best of all time he was a man among boys when he played and he stopped playing in the prime of his carreer only playing 9 seasons. then top goes to barry and OJ with Sayers just behind. I'd Like to put LT on the list but it';s still to soon he could get hurt and his carrear be over. Heres some food for thought though the best RB I have ever seen by far is someone who only played a few seasons because he got hurt. BO JACKSON was an absolute MONSTER.

Why in the @#$% is Reggie in this question? He was'nt even the best TB to come out of USC he's not even in the top 5 in the last [2] decades. Reggie puts the "O" in overrated so we'll temporarily leave him out of this equation. But between Emmit and Walter [THIS IS THE REAL QUESTION] I'll have to go with Walter due to the type of offensive line he ran behind. Nothing personal against the Bears O-line but the 'Boys O-line that Emmit ran behind is a classic at minimum probably the best ever assembled.

It's ridiculous to suggest that Reggie even belongs in the same room as the greats. He has a long way to go! Payton was better than Emmitt because he didn't have the O-line Emmitt did. The all-time greatest was Barry Sanders. He holds the record for most yards lost in a career and still got within a year or two of breaking the career rushing mark!

Walter Payton. Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, and Barry Sanders all make the list before Emmit Smith. Reggie Smith has a lot of yards and years to go before this becomes a serious question.

Base of Reggies bush's rookie season, he didnt get a 1000 but hes way too young. He shouldnt even be up there with the 1st and 2nd leading all time NFL leading rusher. I understand if you have LT because he had consecutive 1000 and the way he continues he can be in the top 8 leading rusher.

Walter Payton had speed and power and can go through defenders. Emmit Smith had power to run through defender. Reggie Bush in the NFL have only speed to go around and beat them outside and cant go insider like Payton and Smith. Payton and Smith takes contact especially Payton. If Payton has a chance to score with a defender in front of him, he would truck and make all contact, the same with Smith. Bush in that case will try to juke the defender and if that doesnt work he will ge tackle or get popped.

Reggie probably has the best raw talent... but you cant compare Emmit to Payton because they played in such different time periods the game as much different.... the juries still out in the next 10 years + we will see how bush turns out... since he started playing at 21 he could have 15 + years if he stays healthy.Which begs the question Texans.....WHY?
