By the way, depending on where the people were living, they might have been either hunters or gatherers, or they might have been both.

Some early man lived primarily on meat and therefore they were hunters, obviously. For the people of the great plains in the USA, the North American bison (buffalo) was their chief supply of food, and this was also supplemented with deer and antelope. Meat was their entire way of life, from the houses they lived in, teepee's covered with buffalo hides, to ropes and clothing. But not everyone was.

In certain areas the plant life was so rich they didn't need to hunt much or very often and lived principally on plants. In coastal and valley areas of California the principle food item was the acorn, from the oak tree. This was grounded, washed repeatedly to remove the tanins and poisons, and then baked. Unfortunately, not only did the washing remove the poisons, it also removed most of the nutrients. They could supplement this diet with wild berries, roots (wild onions for examples) etc.
