Anyone know a math theory about why this comes out the way it does?
3 MEN GO INTO A MOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID THE ROOM IS $30, SO
EACH MAN PAID $10 AND WENT TO THE ROOM.
A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE ROOM WAS ONLY $25, SO
HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH $5.
ON THE WAY, THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT $5 EVENLY
BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A $1 AND KEPT THE OTHER $2 FOR
HIMSELF.
THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL OF
$27, ADD THE $2 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = $29.
WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

$27 = $25 + $2, which is the cost of the room plus the amount the bellboy kept. This is the total amount charged to the men ($9 each x 3 = $27).

this really isn't that complicated, we just tend to over-analyze it. the cost of the room was originally thought to be $30, so that is what was originally charged to the men. the desk man then refunded the $5, making the total cost $25. the $27 comes from the $25 paid for the room and the $2 that the bellboy kept. this is logical because each of the 3 men paid $9 (equals $27) and the room was $25 plus the $2 the bellboy kept (which also equals $27)

There isn't really a theory for this one. This is because there is no missing dollar. The room was $25 plus the $3 returned to the men plus $2 to the bellboy add up to thirty.

Sorry misread this at first, the 3 dollars are now with the men, 2 with the bellboy and the rest(25) with the man behind desk.

The room was $25
The Bellboy kept $2 for himself.
That is a total of $27
Each of the 3 men paid $9
and $9 x 3 = $27
Wallah!!

We are only talking about $30.
$ 25 = is with the man behind the desk
$ 3 = is with each of the guest
$ 2 = is with the bell boy.
$25 + $ 3 + $ 2 = $ 30
So nothing is missing!!!!!

It is still there. We are adding wrong.
$25 for the room plus the $2 the bellboy took, sums up to $27, take the one dollar each man have, times it by three,it is three. Now add the three dollars to twenty-seven dollars is thirty.

The cost of the room is $25
the bell boy kept $2 with him
so the total amount is $25+$2=$27.
so each men paid $9 ($9*3=$27)
where is the confusion

$25 for the room rate + $2 for the bell boy + $3 as the change, the sum is $30 ...
or
$25+2= $27 + $1 + $1 + $1 = $30
