Just ask him if you could ask a personal question. If he says yes then ask him if he is gay. I have done this before and it works.

Well, it depends on why you're asking him.

If you're gay or bisexual, I'd start up a conversation on attractive people. If he's gay and comfortable with it, he'll probably offer up some hot guys.
If you're straight, he'll probably be a little taken back with a straight out question. I'd try saying something like "Hey, I don't have a problem with it if you are, but are you gay?". Maybe mention a cousin or friend who's gay or something. It'll make him more at ease if he knows you're asking from a good place.

First start out discussing sexuality. Get his views on it. See how he reacts to questions about knowing gay people and what rights they should have.

You could always tell them you've heard that sexuality is something on a continuum, where straight is at one end, gay is at the other, and most people fall somewhere between these extremes. You could then ask where they thought they fell.

What you could do is (and this might make him a bit uncomfortable if he isn't gay) make some gay gestures, like "accidentally" touch his hand or leg or something and see how he reacts. I'm a girl and I'm not gay or anything, so I don't know how this will work. I'm not sure of any other way, so I hope this helps you out. Good luck.

Jusk ask him directly.
I have once been asked by a girl if I'm gay or not. I was a little surprised at first, but I just gave a true and honest answer, "No". I did not find it offensive in anyway.

Well, you could always just ask me if I'm gay and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable or pressured, and I am really gay.

Just ask him! If you want to be sure you don't offend him, perhaps it would be best to put the question the other way around. That is to say, ask him something like 'So, you're straight, right?' If he DOES seem to be getting offended, you can just tell him it's all cool and you were just wondering and so on.

Use senses. You don't need to come right out and ask because if he is and isn't out, you're going to make him really uncomfortable. Depending on how old you are and how long you've been out, you learn to develop questions to ask that answer that for you.
