They eat different types of foods that is why they make food for tropicals and food for goldfish but you can give it to them as a treat as long as you still feed them goldfish food as their main diet. If the tropical food has been opened for more then a year though it is old and should be thrown out.

The food types are really not that different - most of the difference is in the labelling on the container. Use the tropical food sometimes and a goldfish food sometimes and they will do just fine. The Spirulina suggestion is always a great part of the diet of almost any fish.

Stick to the goldfish food.Tropical fish food is not meant for a goldfish as these have different minerals, vitamins, and protein than what a goldfish needs. The flake foods are not that expensive, I would just toss it.

I would use a fish food designed for goldfish as they have different requirements. I also recommend pelleted food for gold fish as pelleted food expands better in a goldfish's gut and will be less likely to cause intestinal infections brought on by air in the intestines. I also recommend soaking the food for 5 minutes prior to feeding and balancing the diet with Spiulina, frozen or FD brine shrimp and other food supplements (although I do not recommend worms for goldfish).
Stay away from poor quality goldfish foods such as TetraFin. Hikari, Sanyu, and others make excellent goldfish diets along with Spirulina 20 as a source for Spirulina.
Here is an article I recommend reading for more information about proper fish food ingredients:

To thrive, goldfish need a diet high in plant material. You can feed them the flakes you have, but I wouldn't feed them only that. I would alternate the flakes in every third or fourth feeding, feed them algae based or spironella flakes for most of their feedings.
