I once calculated the speed of lightning (extremely fast photography and measure the distance travelled from one exposure to the next). It's not, as many people think, the same as the speed of light - it's much, much slower - a mere average of 38 kilometres a second (about 85,000 miles per hour).

The speed at which the lightning 'travels' both up and down and via the zig zags is constant (excepting atmospheric variations). What would be affected if it didn't zigzag is the time taken to 'travel' the length of the stroke - but that would only be a small fraction of a second.

Hmmm...of all the things I've wondered about in this life...can't say as that is one of them...I imagine it would be a few micro seconds faster though.

nah - not sure it would matter

speed of light is constant with atmospheric variations making almost no impact at all.

you'd still be dead (or at least, in bad shape)
