You might want to check into convicts or kribs, though they get a bit aggressive when breeding, they otherwise fit your needs.

In the higher price side and a little harder to keep and breed are the various Apistogramma species. As you have so much experience with aquariums in general, you could manage these guys after reading up on them just a bit, they aren't THAT hard to keep. They should also sell very well to the local shops as many are very pretty and hard to find in stores. I would suggest you buy your breeding stock from a breeder so that you can get better starting stock. These little fish would surely meet every requirement you have for your next step up.

Here's a link devoted entirely to apistogrammas and managed by the formost hobbist group working with these fish. If you want to work with apistos, this is the place for you.

Hope that helps

if i were u. u should get pair of convict cichlids. i have 2 pairs of them, they're kinda aggressive to protect they're babies, though. u just need about 20 gallons per mated pair of them. they lay babies about 100-600 babies at a time. they breed about every 2 weeks

How about mollies? They reproduce quickly and are hearty fish.
