My new husband and I are looking to move to the Orlando area. I'm from NY and he's from KY. NY is too expensive and KY has no job market whatsoever. He has an Associates in Human Services and will be continuing at UCF. I have Customer Service experience but have always wanted to get into entertainment (I costumed off-broadway plays when I lived in NY).
We have plenty to complain about here. What will we complain about in Orlando?

Orlando is a rapidly-growing city with a strong economy and many nice residential areas to choose from. I was raised in Central Florida and I personally love living here in Orlando. Just like any big city there always are and always will be pros and cons, especially as the city grows more and more everyday, but for the most part I think you will enjoy living here. But to answer your question, here is what I see as the big 3 cons of living in Orlando:

TRAFFIC!
Traffic in Orlando can be a DISASTER!! Especially during the daily rush hours, special events, and in the tourist areas. In addition, theres always something going on in Orlando, whether its a sold-out game at the Amway Arena or a big convention at the convention center, so I recommend you stay away from those immediate areas if you know those dates and times or your in for a traffic nightmare!

HOT! HOT! HOT!
During the long summer season make sure you have a good working A/C both in your car and in your home. Temperatures get very HIGH and the humidity makes it even worse! Its nice but remember to stay hydrated and wear sunblock if your outdoors for long periods of time.

BUGS/MOSQUITOES:
During the SUMMER I recommend you stay indoors, in screened areas, or with bug spray in the late afternoon/evening hours or you will be the next big meal for Orlando's mosquitoe population. During certain seasons, you also have to bear with LOVE BUGS which are harmless but swarm everywhere you go and can really splatter your car and windshield, so make sure you keep your washer fluid stocked and wash your car regularly during those seasons.

Thats pretty much it. If you can handle those 3 cons then you will enjoy Orlando. I personally think the pros far outweigh any of the cons. Here is a link to the Orlando Sentinel which is the local metropolitan newspaper:

Hope that helps. Good Luck.

The Chamber of Commerce won't like what I have to say about Orlando.

My family in Orlando goes back to the 1920's, I have left but still have many family members still there.

In 2003 my wife & I could no longer stand Orlando, sold our house and bought a motor home. We still travel to Orlando every week or so to visit my 96 year old Mother who still lives there. We drive 80 miles to her home and spend 2 hours doing that. We must pay $6.00+ on tolls. Orlando can't build a new road unless it's a toll road.

You will hate the traffic in and around the Orlando Metro area. I hate to say it but I believe Orlando's traffic problem will never be fixed. While in Orlando you will notice bridges across several lakes. These lakes were used by the public for water sports. They still are but with 1/2 the lake.

Orlando is great for businesses since the community leaders cater to all businesses. Behind our house was a wetlands, complete with all the animals that live in such places. It was some how plowed under and a warehouse club was built on top of it.

Disney & WalMart are dragging down wages. Manufacturing has left the city. I was making $40,000+ in 1988 when my job left town. When I retired in 2003 I finally worked my way up to that level again. There are many people earning a good living in Orlando but most are not.

Orlando even caters to their franchise sports team the Magic. Orlando built them a top notch arena to play at. They weren't happy and needed another one. Now this team is owned by a man who made a fortune with his main company, Amway, but he can't make money with this team????? Orlando will step in and underwright the magic some way.

Orlando used to be a great town for families now it's a great town for hustlers.

Generally speaking, the cost of living and traffic. It'll help if you can find a decent place to live in a semi-quiet area, but anything too close to the central point and you're begging for non-stop headaches... so keep a bottle of Advil in the car! LOL

Seasonally speaking, you're going to have LOADS upon LOADS of tourists and the Florida heat is great, but during the midst of summer, it's not just hot, it's HOT. Just make sure wherever you live and whatever you drive has adequate air conditioning and you'll be good to go. Oh, and depending on where you live, if you have a pool or your car is parked out of sight, always look before you enter your pool or car... alligators are notorious for being in people's pools and under their cars trying to find shade.

Good luck with your move and new jobs. I wish you the best!

There is a whole website dedicated to answering your question! www.orlandofloridasucks.com... on a personal note in the last 3 years I have seen atleast 15 people come to work at my job from New York and within a year quit and move back there. If you want to know what is wrong with Orlando take the problems of New Your and multiply them by 2... same problems here, just bigger..

What doesn't? I live in Orlando, but as soon as I am old enough I plan to move. The traffic, rising crime(do you know we beat NYC last year for murders per capita?), rising costs, snobby people, the entire east side speaks only Spanish, the humidity and heat.... There are not many enterainment jobs here, so it may be hard to find a job.

Traffic, traffic , traffic. The crime rate in Orlando is skyrocketing, murders are double what they were this time last year. Housing, also is very expensive and wages are not that great here in Florida

Simple; the tourists. Between Disney, and if the Magic make the playoffs(especially when they play the Bulls) you are gonna see crowding and nastiness up the wazoo.
