There are over 500,000 listed sex offenders on the national registry. Since the population of the U.S. is 300 million that means 1 out of every 60 people is a registered sex offender.

NOW - only about 10% of the sex offense crimes are reported (according to advocates FOR the registry) which means 1 out of 6 people is a sex offender.

That's right, if you have a family of 6 - one of your family members - statistically speaking - is a sex offender.

the list in and of itself is not a joke, its a much needed tool. as with many things there are some strong arguments as to the use of the list and the reasons that people are being placed on the list. many people feel that the list should contain only violent sex offenders, pedophiles, serial perverts and rapists. if you research the type of crimes that can land you on the list in some places, you will discover that many people are being placed on the list for far lesser offenses. i'am not going to debate the issue or take sides, however i sometimes wonder if 40% of the U.S. population wont one day be listed there. i have given your question a star because i would like to hear more feedback on this one......good work on the question.

I think that the list is becoming a bit of a joke. I have looked at this list and some of these people are not even there because they commited an act that was largely even rape. Some of them are there because they have dated someone who is under 18. Some of them are not there due to rape. Now if we are talking about people who are baby rapers, yeah I think they should be put on. If we are talking about men that date people under 18 (the fine line of the law limit) that get charged and convicted then I don't really think that they should be on the list unless the people were very young or the women were under say the age of 13 or soemthing like that. We have a list of sex offenders. We should have it seperated by what types of csc (criiminal sexual conduct) that they were involved with. Baby rapers should be what the list is primarily focussed on. Babies include all children under the age of 12 years old in my opinion.

God Bless

I think putting people on the SO list because they didn't know they were doing a person under 18 is wrong. Also those who are in relationships where both are in agreement (and their parents are agreeing to the relationship) should not be on the SO list. Also those whose parents do not agree with the relationship for whatever reason should not be on the list.

They should have exact charges listed. Some sites do already thankfully.
