i was just wondering what are the best or recommended novels to read as preliminary reading before i start my higher education in English literature. i would appreciate names of authors and their recommended works.

A complete reading list would be too long to offer here!

Also, don't limit yourself to novels. Poetry and drama and short stories are also important (you don't want to omit Shakespeare, right?).

Try getting a copy of Harold Bloom's "The Western Canon"--it's as good a list as any, and your library probably has three copies :-)

I have an MA in English, but didn't give myself a reading list before I started. My BA in English gave me a solid background... and you can choose your area of specialization in an MA program. Do you still have your books from undergrad? The Norton Anthologies are pretty comprehensive.
