I am wondering what is the best thing to do with a laptop when not in use. Should it be turned off everytime, or put on standby? I pretty much just have it at a desk and never move it around, so it's used like a desk top. I use it about 5 times a day for 5 mins to a couple hours sometimes.

I also have it plugged in and the battery isn't in it.

standby
everytime you turn off a computer and then turn it back on, you wear down the hard disk. after many times of wearing it down, someday, the computer wont start at all.

I do have laptop like desktop and also use some time in day. But what I want to tell you is:
Whenever you turn on PC keep update, Anti virus soft, Windows, Ms Office and there will be no problem then remember one thing more, if you want the batter to use longer better use full battery before you turn off PC. Stand by mode is also a good idea.

I hope this may give you some idea

It's not so much a question of moving it around as it is of screen wear. The dots will over time gets blurred and the images will become hazy. This applies to all computers.
You could also face an overheating problem that desktops don't.
My suggestion is leave it on only when you know you will be using it again shortly. Shut it down when not needed for a longer period. Using a sleep mode will keep it working and wearing out.

OK well if u know Ur going to be using it with in a few hours them put in on stand by then all you need to do is open it and it's ready and you don't have to wait for it to start up. but if you are going somewhere with friends or something or are going to be out or are just not going to be using it for more that 3 hrs then turn it off. when a laptop is running for a long time then it's motor heats up and can burn your hardrive out. to replace your hard drive is very pricey. also it can start loosing memory after being on for quite a while and will run the battery power low. so turn it off when you are absolutely sure that you aren't going to be using it for a long time and you'll be in good shape! :)

Dear Friend !!!!!!!

I do use my laptop whole day. Now you question is not so much clear. You mean when it is not in use for and hour or more than that.

I would suggest you to keep in stand by but be sure dont close its flap of screen. Flap of screen should be opened and kept.

Cheers
