1 total no of cakes=12+4=16.... if each of the 16 cakes is equally cut into 5 pieces den total no of pieces of cake =80
80 pieces is divided into 5 students then each person will recieve 16 pieces if 5 pieces make a cake then each student recieved 3cakes and 1/5 of a cake(i.e, 1 piece)
2 5 identical papers each cut into 3
then total no=15
distributed among 6 then each get 2 and 1/2 rectangles

4 +12=16/5=3 1/5 cakes apiece or 3 cakes and 1 left over
5 x 3=15/6= 2 1/2 rectangular pieces each or 2 whole and 3 left over

1.
4 cakes + 12 cakes = 16 cakes
Suasanne and Barry had 16 cakes altogether

16 cakes divided by 5 students = 3.2 or 3 1/5 cakes
Each pupil got 3.2 or 3 1/5 cakes.

2.
5 pieces of paper divided by 3 pieces = 15 pieces of paper
15 pieces of paper divided by 6 students = 2 pieces with 3 remainder (since she cut the paper pre-distribution and it does not mention her cutting the paper again)

your equations are: x-3y = -4 and 2x + 6y = 5. get the fee of y from the first equation- y = ( x + 4)/3 then change this to the 2d equation, 2x + 6 ( x + 4) / 3 = 5 2x + 2 ( x + 4) = 5 x = - 3/4 , then change this fee to the y equation, this may yield y = 13/12 0r a million and a million/12.
