You can file an extension which gives you an additional six months or so. However, if you file an extension, and you think you may still owe taxes, then you should send the IRS a check for whatever you think you might owe, so that you avoid fees and penalties. Then, after you get all the paperwork together, and you discover that you overpaid the IRS, you can get a refund (but they don't pay you interest, although you have to pay them interest. Sounds unfair, but that's life).

If you both had normal jobs that withheld your taxes, and you don't have a huge amount of interest income or capital gains or dividends, then what was withheld from your paychecks may be enough and you won't owe anything. Here's a question: last year, did you owe anything? If not, is 2006 that different from 2005?

Tax returns must be filed online, or postmarked, by April 17 this year. You can request an automatic extension using form 4868, and that will give you additional time to file. If you think you'll owe though, you should send in the money when you file the extension form - it just lets you FILE later, not PAY later. If you expect a refund, just file the form.

Call the IRS because I think if a spouse is in the service you get an automatic extension or just file for the extention. It is also automatic. You just have to pay any taxes due whick you probably don't have any of and will be getting a refund.
