what is the difference between multimode and single-mode fiber-optic cable.

I dont know how technical you are so I will put this in generic simplified form. In multimode data is transfered through the cable using multiple beams of light.

In single mode data is transfered using a single ray. It is actually more complex, but that is the general gist.
