Mark Spitz has won a total of 11 gold medals in his olympic history. But he has not won the most olympic medals in his Olympic career. He did set the record for the most Gold medals at a single Olympic Games. Phelps is best known for his achievements in swimming, which include a record of eight medals at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, six of which were gold, tying the Olympic record for medals at single Olympics, held by Alexander Dityatin since 1980.
