There were 5 presidents before George Washington, but Washington was the first elected after the Constitution was ratified, and the US was "officially" a soverign country. Schools teach that Washington was our first president, and although that isn't really true, I guess it's close enough.

Well under the Constitution it was George Washington but they say there was 5 more before him. I saw that on some of those flash cards that have 1000 facts on them!
