Is there a system in place to warn us, even if we are asleep. Will our telephones ring or something? How would we know to evacuate?

If there was a tsunami warning anywhere in the world at 1am most people would not know about it. In any case, a destructive tsunami in Australia is highly unlikely as the coast is well protected by reefs and islands.

We don't have a good tsnami warning system in place here in Aus.
I've just read on the front page of yahoo that the government is currently looking in to it.
So i guess all we can do is hope we don't get a tsunami at 1 am.

One thing I can assure you - you can't depend on the commercial radio and TV to do it. January 1974, a large proportion of Brisbane goes under water. Apart from their news breaks, you would not know it was happening if you had not looked out the window but were listening to some commerical radio or watching some commercial TV station.

Canberra, 30 years later, 500 houses burn down. Commercial media mostly ignores the disaster even as it is occurring.

Althoug I don't live in Australia, you do not need a tsunami warning if you are not near the shore.
