to answer question-- When we ordered I got a quote for 9 squares (900sf), 18 boxes. I was given a price for 9 squares which is what was needed. They ORDERED 18 boxes, which is way too much. So we gave the wrong number of boxes, but the right amount needed. They didn't question why the difference. We kept 5 boxes. The person who helped us figured the wrong number of boxes.

It sounds like you got WAY too much siding.
It is normal for a lumber yard to charge a restocking fee, it usually is around 10 percent of purchase price. This usually only applies to special orders, but smaller yards may charge it for any purchase.

if the vinyl siding is in the origional boxes and the boxes are in good shape-then I would have to say-YES -they should take it back-after all they were part of the blame
Call the manager and raise a stink-do not threaten to "never shop there again" but be firm
If they don't help out -sell the siding to a local contractor and never return to that store

Really hard to answer without the facts of why each of you made a mistake. If they sent more than you ordered, it's their problem. If you ordered more than you needed, it's your problem. If a salesman ordered according to your measurements (correct measurements) still their problem. How much was returned? Sounds like a LARGE amount.

If it was only their fault. then no...but since it was also your fault, then they could say that you share some of the blame...depending on the cost, I think that $348 is a bit steep...
you could negotiate with them to see if they will lower the fee, and if you paid with a credit card, you could try and dispute it...
good luck

you should have received what you ordered & up to a partial box - if they estimated, they should restock free
