A mild dilation of the kidneys came back in my baby. I am 35 weeks pregnant. The fullness is 4mm. I had every test for downs that came back fine, which I know is not full proof. However I am so worried. I am 36. I declined amnio.

I think the keyword is 'mild'. Doctors have to tell you if something is abnormal.... but how many of us are actually completely normal? Don't worry about it. Your baby will be perfect.

hi...first of all congratulations on the upcomming birth of your baby! to answer your initial question...no my son did not have renal dilation, nor have I met any parents of DS kids that have had this. you stated that you had every test for DS....which ones where they? did you have the level 2 or high intensity ultra-sound.. where they measure the fungal fold and long bones of the baby as well as look for any congenital heart defects and intestinal defects? this ultra-sound is fairly accurate in looking for markers of DS, but as you have probably been told an amnio is the only sure fire way. I wouldn't be worried (personally there is no reason to worry even if your baby has DS). if the doctors suspected down syndrome you would have been told.
My son was born with a congenital heart defect called av-canal which is a hole in the heart chambers and he required open heart surgery at 4 months old. having a child with down syndrome is not the end of the world...believe me....if your baby happens to have DS..you will love them and be proud of them just like you would a "typical" child....you know why? because they are a child first...not a 'syndrome' and most importantly this baby is your baby...I bet you already love this child and would do anything in the world for him/her! After having 3 boys with my youngest having down syndrome I have to say that raising my youngest is basically the same as it was for raising my other boys, with the only difference being he had therapies to help in his development. he still learns, laughs, plays, is naughty lol, and gives love to everyone...so really is that any different?...not in my eyes. the unknown is down right frightening at times...but all parents face this at one point or another with their children whether thay have ds or not. the only thing you need to remember is to love your child no matter what they are born with or do in their lives... that is what being a parent is all about. so please don't worry...enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and look forward to seeing your baby! take care.

This is common and in most cases returns to normal before birth, or can be treated just after.

Try not to worry about your baby - just be happy with your pregnancy and the life growing inside of you.

God bless.
