I like to look for inspiration by looking at what other people have knit. Sometimes I see projects and think, "Wow, I would have never thought to knit that." Why don't you try looking at some other people's photos of their knitting projects on a website like flickr?
Here's a good place to start:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/knitting/
Then, when you find something you'd like to make, you can find the pattern, get your yarn, and get started.

The Erika knight classics book if full of great stuff, I'm doing 3 projects out of there at the moment. www.knittingpatterncentral.com is full of free online patterns. www.knitty.com always have great stuff.
Although it all depends on what sort of thing you like to do. When ever I hegt hit with knitters block, I either just do socks, or I grab a nice yarn out of my stash, cast on a random number of stitches, one of 2 things happen as I knit, The yarn either turns into something beatiful, or I beocome inspired to do something more spcific with it.
Either way, starting with the yarn instead of the pattern always leads to creativity.
Good luck & happy knitting

If you like complicated multi-coloured things and your skills are up to it, try some of Kaffe Fasset's designs.
If you want something simple, then why not try a scarf - but make it out of the best yarn you can, like a fine cashmere, and make it out of fine yarn on a circular needle so you're doing nothing but knit stitch - you finish up with double thickness, which is gorgeously warm, and cashmere makes you feel great when knitting with it and wearing it.

You don't say your skill level but there are a lot of free patterns on the Internet. You can start here:
http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/projects/project_more.html#knit
If those don't meet your needs, then use your favorite search engine (I often use http://www.google.com ) and search for the particular project you are interested in. For example you might put in, "easy knitted cap pattern" and it should give you links to sites with that information.

My current favorite site for patterns is www.lionbrand.com. They are ranked by skill level. My next project is the Tumbling Blocks Throw with 16 different colors.
