Hi. I have a 2000 Compaq and it has not been run in about 4 years. When I went to turn it on the other day a message came on saying "no operating system found". I tried a compaq quick restore disc but it didn't work. Is there someplace I can download something to get it working or is there a trick to getting it to "find" it's operating system? Thanx.

Try the restore disk that will format back to factory settings. Insert CD then reboot your computer.

First make sure there isn't a floppy disk in the drive. It will automatically try to boot from the floppy and ignore the hard drive.

If that doesn't work, the next step is to open it up and VERY carefully reseat your hard drive cables (I usually just pull both power and ribbon cable and put them back in, then pull the ribbon cable from the motherboard and reseat it as well - again, be very careful to get them back exactly as they were).

If it still won't boot, then your hard drive may be toast. You might be able to format it and reload it, but your data may be lost. You might consider having someone take a look at it if it is worth it to you, but I wouldn't pay anyone a whole lot of money unless you have data that is irreplaceable on it.

I had to have mine completely restored, and even have the hard drive replaced. It works better than before it went into storage. The price was minimal...though,i went to a private technician.GOOD LUCK!

Make sure your PC boots from CD first (in BIOS).

Then, try the Restore CD again.

If you can't find the BIOS, take it in to a good repair shop.
