how long does it take to drive around the coast of australia?
I shall be starting from Sydney and would like to know how long it would take to drive around the coast of australia.

Would this take 6 months possibly by car? or longer? I want to see australia by the coast and have a travel experience of a life time

Well Australia is a pretty big place, with much of the coast very beautiful so you would definitely want to linger in many places.

My friend did the journey from Sydeny to Darwin (in the far north) in 3 months, but part of that was done on a bicycle, the rest by bus.

When I was 3 years old (and having been in Australia for 2 years) my parents bought a caravan and travelled around about 1/3 of australia looking for a work and a nice place to live. That took more than 6 months.

So unless you like to rush everything, you would probably want to plan 6-12 months. The roads at the top end these days are pretty good, but only during the wet season is there really any problem.

Real Australians are very friendly and helpful, you stop your car to point percy at the porcelan pew (take a piss) and cars will stop and as if you are ok.

Plan on summer in the south and winter in the north. In Darwin in winter it actually might even go below 20 during the night and only up to 30 in the day.

Places to linger would be the south coast of NSW (try a town named Eden), the North Coast of NSW, North Queensland (not far north Queensland, but just North Queensland, try Townsville), the Atherton Table Lands in North Queensland, Kakadu national park in the Northern Territory, Broome in Western Australia and along the coast in the great Australian Bite.

Please don't forget to go to Tasmania, or they will get upset as we always left them off the map.

If you stick to Highway 1, it is about 20,000km. Highway 1, however, cuts off lots of the coast. If you were to stick to the coast as much as possible you would need a 4WD as a lot of it would be on very rough roads, particularly in the north and many of those roads are impassable in the wet season.

It would be possible at 100km/h to travel round Highway 1 in 200 driving hours which is a little less than 10 days but you would need to stop for food, fuel and rest and you wouldn't see much.

By the way, ignore the Wolf Creek nutters, hitchhiking is still safe in Australia both for hitchers and drivers.

It will cost you a fortune in petrol, but why not do it? You could offer to write regular bulletins for a newspaper or magazine along the way. Sounds like a fantastic idea to me. I do know my husband drove round the coast from Perth to Sydney (via Adelaide) and it took him 2 weeks, although he did stop along the way to sample the Barossa wines ;-)

Allow at least 3 months, preferably four. Reserve accomodation in the more remote locations in advance as the roads are full of grey nomads spending the kid's inheritance. Otherwise take camping facilities.

Do you really want to circumnavigate the country or do you actually want to see stuff? Coz there's plenty more than the coast (although it is pretty spectacular too). Why not do some research and put an itinerary together and then repost your question?

I think it will probably take more than 3 months. However, it vary. If you stay in every location that you travel to, the time it takes, will certainly take longer!

Depends on how long you want to take and where you are going. I have know friends that have taken years. There is so much to see and so much to full in love with.

Are you mad, there is nothing there. It would take forever and imagine the cost of gas. Just stick to Sydney and some of the other major cities. But diff pick up as many hitchikers as possible, you will need the company to stay awake.
