I just reinstalled xp on a presario700. It was very difficult and seemed to be commonly have problems to lots of people to reinstall. ( i recommend against it unless you have ) in which case in my case the Hard drive had bad sectors in the last 25% of the disc which caused problems with windows installing , since it puts files in different locations on the hard drive. Anyways i had to partition the first 75% of the hard drive as C and the last bit as D in order for windows to be able to install on C. the last part of the hard drive ( D ) is unusable.
But as far as installing it you just put your cd in and reboot the pc. It will ask you to hit a key to bott from CD. Then you delete the old partition and install a fresh copy of windows on your new ( RAW ) partition.
Hope this helps , but i recommend against it unless you have to.

To reinstall the Operating System on the Pc or Laptop, One needs the Bootable CD of the operating System (Windows XP in your Case).
You may purchase it from Microsoft if you don't have it.
Insert the CD into the drive and restart your System. In the BIOS Setting set your System to boot from CD.
Os interface will ask you some questions during the installation.
You must have some knowledge of installing the software before doing this.
All the Best

If you have the Compaq restore CD's this is an easy item.
Just boot them and follow the steps.
If not you can order them from Compaq.
If you want to do it manually you can use a normal Windows CD - boot, reformat, install, then go to Compaq and download all the drivers.
Before you do all that check to see if you have a "Restore" partition on your machine - Compaq and HP usually put a complete restore on Drive D - you access it as the machine boots. (I think it will say press F10 to restore?)
