An eel is a fish. They are very long and look somewhat like snakes with fins. Eels can be found in saltwater and freshwater. The electric eel lives in the amazon rain forest while the Moray eel lives in the ocean. One interesting fact about the Moray Eel is that one time it was reported that a Moray Eel bit the arm off of a lady while she was scuba diving.

They're fish but if you want to go to a more scientific response, here goes:

Eels are animals (obviously) that belong to the Class Osteichthyes (meaning bony fish which is basically what they are). To break it down more, all true eels (and I'm not talking about sand eels and stuff like that) belong to the Anguilliformes (anguilloide basically means something that is long and maybe round, which eels are). This is further extended to suborders and families and stuff but that's too in depth for a person who asked what a creature an eel is (no offence). Don't confuse eels with snakes (mostly sea snakes) because they're reptiles and not fish like eels are.

You can normally distinguish eels from the sea snakes from the fact that they have gills (since they're fish) and they're entire body is sort of squashed so it looks more like a strip than a worm. Otherwise, better off stay away from them because they bite (but then, its not like sea snakes don't bite) and some are poisonous (and it's not just they're bite too!).

An eel is actually a fish. Some people think its a type of snake because of its long and slimy body. Some also think its an amphibian because there's this eel that can live in and out of water. But an eel is a fish. Nothing else.
Hope i helped!! =)

The true eels are members of the bony fish order Anguilliformes, family Anguillidae. Other eel-like relatives are the congers and the moray eels.

However, there are also other fish known as eels. Other freshwater eels belong to order Synbranchiformes and are very common in shallow ponds throughout America.

And there are also other animals that are not true fish, but are also known as "eels". The skin of the jawless hagfish, or slimy eels, is used and commercialized as "eelskin".
