I find it very frustrating that even when people are in immense pain they can't ask to be 'put down'. It would be for their own good. But then you see the very kind vets who put animals down because they know it would be best for the animal.
I want real answers please!

Because as a species, we are often far more humane to animals than we are to our own kind.
It's also because an animal is unlikely to be leaving lots of money to relatives, and so providing a motive for an untimely death.

As far as I am aware it is legal in Holland. I saw a documentary several years on television about it. I don't remember what medical criteria has to be met for someone choosing euthanasia, but their decision has to be approved by two separate doctors. A date will be decided when it should take place. The local police are informed of the situation and given the relevant paperwork. The doctor then visited the person on a weekly basis to check their health and to see if they were still happy to proceed with their decision. They could of course change their mind at any time.

Now that many hospitals worldwide are respecting patients "living wills" and "do not resuscitate" orders, then perhaps it is only a matter of time before the subject of euthanasia is discussed again by

Having seen several loved ones in severe suffering I believe people should have the right to make their own decision regarding whether or not they wish to continue living.

Yes, I think it's tragic that we can't offer our own kind the same kindness we offer animals.

Sadly, I don't think euthanasia for people can ever be legalised - it would just be abused far too much. Look at Harold Shipman and how many people he managed to kill without euthanasia even being legalised. I just don't think humans can be trusted with this responsibility - it would be bound to be abused. Ideally, each case would be judged individually for what it is, and a legal decision made, but there just isn't time in a legal system to do this - and people in need of euthanasia do not have time for it either!

Because we make the decisions for our animals when we feel there is nothing more we can do for them and they are in too much pain etc. You can travel to Switzerland and Holland which are countries which have legal euthenasia but I think the person has to have give their consent at some stage then their relatives can make the decision when the time is right. I agree that it should be more widely practiced on humans.

Good question.
I am in favour of euthanasia for humans as long as the person is able to make their own choice.
People seem to think that because we are humans that our lives are worth more than an animals and we should struggle on despite being in pain or suffering from an incurable illness.

I guess we're a lot nicer to animals than to humans. I don't think it's OK to keep someone alive when they don't want to be, when they're suffering just to gain a day or two. I think our society is very removed from the reality of death. It is a taboo subject even though this is the only certainty in life!

There are currently legal battles to allow euthenasia for people, so as peoples' ideas about how to approach these issues change so will the law. The reason it's difficult to implement these laws is that it could be argued that they could be abused to kill people who were merely depressed or mentally ill and needed help. Animals obviously can't argue for themselves and have long been killed for food and other uses, so there isn't the usual amount of resistance to killing them for any reason.

its a gud point 1 ive often found myself thinking of. i think that as we talk and pets dont it makes a great difference and an animal cant decide wether it wants to live or die. but i think we should have the right if we are suffering to be able to end our lives in a controlled environment and be able to say our good byes to family without suffering and being in agony until our body cant take anymore. we dont let animals suffer theyre put out of there misery so why let us suffer? good question.

I agree. Cannot say anymore such a painful subject and I think that most of us think whilst there is life there is hope.

That is until we see a nearest dearest suffering immensly and who is ultimately faced with death anyway. Then we pray and wish that we could help to end their agony..perhaps a painful death is hell and dying in our sleep is heaven.

because humans have 'human rights' enshrined in law but dogs and other pets don't have rights. this means that you can not put anyone down to relieve their suffering or because their quality of life is so bad (subjective qualifier I know) but you can do so for a pet.
