Any one donning the Australian colours is likely to justify his place and likewise Shane Watson has also proved his mettle. Apart from being a good bowler and a batsman, he can also open the innings if needed. He is certainly a utility cricketer. Remember Ponting wanted to get fit soon before the World Cup; one was Andrew Symonds and the other was Shane Watson.

Shane Watson is a good UTILITY player, bats a bit, bowls a bit, fields a bit(de Villier's run out).
Cameron White bats a bit, currently is bowling rubbish, fields well.
Now you know who is the better choice one-on-one. Add to it that Watson has been around for some time now(four to five years) and has performed quite well.
So to answer your question, he deserves to be in this current Australian team(provided he is 100% fit) as their only so-called genuine allrounder.

He is not in Pollock or Cairn's mould, so limit your expectations accordingly.

I've heard the Australian press saying he is the first genuine all-rounder that Australia have had for like 40 years. I think he's a good player, and maybe will justify the faith put in him in the future.
I agree with you that Cameron White would probably be a better form selection, but I think Watson will be a better player eventually.

Since many players of Australian Team will be retiring in the coming years and since Watson is a young promising player, he should be persisted with.

Absolutely not! He didn't lose any blood sweat or tears during the Aussie summer and yet they still kept a place for him. I was angry they weren't taking Stuart Clark with them as he should have gone in the first place, but luckily for him Brett Lee got injured (sorry Brett - awesome song though mate, yeah right haha)
