ok so i have 2 blue platys that are more like silver then blue! one is female and one is male, the female is pregnant! i also had 2 red platys that are like orange then red! one female and one male but the male died last week. and the female is pregnant. 2days ago i caught 7 baby fry, they definatly came from one of the platys but which one? as 4 of the fry are silver and 3 of them orange. both female platys look pregnant still, the blue one more then the orange. is it possible that they came from the orange platy as shes looking the thinest and she went with both the orange male platy (whos dead now) and the blue platy?? thanks for any help :o)

Female platys, like many other livebearers, can hold sperm after mating with a male. It's possible that the female was pregnant when you got her and you didn't even get the male responsible for the deed. If you did though, remember that most petshop livebearers are not bred true to color and are all mixed up genetically. Some may show blue but carry orange, while others show orange and carry blue. So to be honest there is no real way to ever know for sure which male was the dad or even if it was one in your tank. If you seperate your male babies from the female babies as they grow and before they get to maturity, then you can control which male gets to which female and over a few generations "clean up" the genetics of your fish so that they breed true.

If you are seeing color in the platy fry then it is deffinetley possible that the father is dead. It takes about (sometimes less than) a month for platy fry to have color, and since females can hold on to their babies for months. the dead platy is probably the father.

It is possiable they interbread. I would have to guess the orange platy is the one who had babies since there is a mix and she seems "smaller" than the other.

It is also possiable they both had babies. It is difficult to say, but my guess would be the orange platy had the fry.

Congrads on the new arrivals!
