Dell's are generally pretty durable and that is the first thing I would consider when buying a laptop that needs to last 2-3 years... I purchased a laptop (Gateway) about 6 months ago and I am amazed how thrashed its become in this short time. My brothers Dell laptop hinge became loose about 3 weeks ago and I was able to tighten it up with a few screws which was pretty cool. Not having to send your laptop in for service (which can take weeks with some companies like Gateway) is very nice.

The Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 is a very nice processor and should easily be able to deal with anything you throw at it for the next 3 years... However if you are going to run the new Windows Vista operating system I would suggest you spend the money and get 2GB's of RAM. Vista loves memory and the little extra will offer you dramatic speed improvements.

Also if you have the choice of upgrading your graphics card I would suggest you do so. Integrated graphics (as is in your (945GM chipset) is going to really slow down your machine. Opting for a discrete graphics solution (An ATI X1300, X1400 or something of the like) is not only going to make your new laptop faster, but able to handle the new High Definition videos and media that will be a lot more available in 2-3 years...

Good Luck, I Hope I've Helped!

1. the 945GM video card is shared memory, and will probably slow down XP or Vista. I would go with the Vista compatible 256MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 110M TurboCacheTM 4.

2. Nothing was mentioned on the hard drives. I expect most laptops need a 120gb, 7200rpm and at least 8mb cache, or better, for good laptop performance.

3. Wireless - does the unit have built-in wireless for networking, like 802.11b?

4 Bluetooth - by chance does it have bluetooth? This is good for using headsets, transferring pictures and Contacts back and forth

5 Does it include an OS like Vista? And which one?

If your looking for a worry free computer with the longest life span buy a Mac.

Trust me its worth the couple of extra bucks. You get so much more that just lasts and lasts. Im on a Mac right now thats 12 years old and for the most part out performs alot of PC computers.

depends on what do you intend to use this for...

normal usage, i think it's good... but if you intend to use is for graphic intensive things, it's always good to be generous with the RAM and hard disk space... get a better video card as well...

don't really fancy notebooks for gaming...
