Why do you think we haven't admitted anymore states into the United States. There are many candiates for the position of 51st state, however none have admitted. What do you think is the hold-up on statehood for DC, Puerto Rico, or the other territories and possessions of the United States. What territory do you think has the highest chances of being admitted first.

As a Second Question, what are the current laws or protocols that would govern the admittance of a new state.

Puerto Rico is not a Country. It is a Territory of the United States; much like the USVI and Guam.

User HDZ sent me an answer that had nothing to do with the question but basically added information concerning the Nationality of Puerto Rico. To that claim will add that i read the link for the UN, which does not point out Puerto Rico as a country. Also it needs to be added that just because a territory is in the UN, does not make it a nation nor not being in the UN does it not make a territory a nation.

Also, it is included they have their own olympic team. Korea has a joint team, but this doesn't mean there is one Korea.

And lastly it is given that they have National Anthem--which also means peanuts.

Finally I saw that you said that puerto rico has it's own constitution. ..this also does not point out it as a seperate nation from the united states--as a consittution only is the framework of the government. Unless there is a declaration of succession from as territory from the united states--I would not call Puerto Rico a Country.

DC is a city, it is the capital of the nation. making it the 51 state makes no sense.
Puerto Rico is a country with a political association to the US, they don't want to become a US state , they want to continue being their own country with their own language and latin culture.

The best chance is the US Virgin Islands, they speak english and are the population is very small, less than 150,000.

Puerto Rico is a latin american country, it has an olympic team , a national anthem "La Borinqueña" and their own constitution since 1952 which established the Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico (translation: Puerto Rican Free Associated state ) and it is considered a country but without sovereignty.
Puerto Rico has an unique culture, language and religion and more than 500 years of history and are considered a nationality.
THe United Nations recognized the Free Determination of Puerto Rico already.

First off, DC was created so that it specifically wouldnt be in a state (and therefore no state being able to claim it had the capital.) secondly, it makes no sense to give a _city_ 2 senate votes.

Puerto Rico continually votes AGAINST statehood, and they have to vote to join before they can be admitted.

No current territory has a chance to become the next state in our lifetime. most likely, it will be a canadian province after quebec secedes from canada.

Puerto Rico might be the 51st state because its people feel like American citizens.
