Well, very few people would be buying Harleys if it wasn't for the marketing. 25 years ago, they were considered crap bikes that only 1 percenters rode. The exquisite marketing of HD turned them into an icon.

Marketing is a two way communication process and in the process of trying to market an existing or a new product, the marketers get a lot of information from the end users or would be users (every one is a potential user), about what they are looking for. Similarly by test marketing new, innovative and revolutionary products and or services, marketers do shape customer wants.

I would say it is pretty high.

Whenever something new comes out - and people see the ads for it, then they suddenly 'want it'. People tend to be sheep, especially after they see other people using a product (cars being the most obvious example - but it applies to a lot of other things too).

I tend to ignore ads, and buy what I actually want. I can't stand salepeople, marketers, or admen. I do research, test out whatever it is, try as many different kinds of whatever it is as possible, then try to find the best (not always just the cheapest) price.
