It's not silly - it's a very logical question.
There is no evidence of what was happening before the Big Bang. We have a very strong understanding of what things were like at the instant after the Big Bang, and a pretty good understanding of what happened at that exact instant, but beforehand? Not so much.
It all depends on the shape of the Universe and the fate of the universe that existed before ours (if one DID exist before ours).en

The big bang is what is called a singularity. The problem with a singularity is that you cannot trace anything - including the laws of physics - through it. There will never be any experiment that can be performed that will be able to see beyond the point of the singularity, and so whatever people speculate it will always remain speculation.
In a sense this means that it does not matter what - or even if - there was something before the big bang (taking before in a very loose sense - as someone pointed out, the big bang represents t=0 for our universe).

There is a theory that the big bang happens over and over again, it is called a closed universe. The big bang sends all the material outward. One day the gravitational attraction of the matter in the universe will cause the movement away from each other to slow down, come to a halt. The gravity will pull the galaxies back to the center of the universe. After billions of years the matter will eventually be back, packed into a small area. Another big bang will occur and the material will expand outward again.

As has been stated, we cannot know what might have come before the Big Bang, but more to the point, we can't know whether or not there WAS a "before." Time itself is a property of the universe, and in a very real sense, speaking of time before it's creation is an oxymoron.
Now, if the universe we know is just part of a cycle of creation, collapse and explosion into a new universe, then there may have been time before our Big Bang. Or, if this universe is but a slice of a larger "super-universe," as some theories hold, then this or any other universe may be living its span within a larger continuum of time.
However, as it stands, we have no way of stating for a fact that either of those things is true.

Nobody knows for sure, but this is what I think:
I think that the universe is a pulsating cycle. Before the Big Bang, another ancient universe existed. The thing is that there is more mass than necessary. This would cause gravity to pull every single object towards one single tiny spot which would be the center of the universe. This would be know as the Big Crunch. When there was so much mass in that spot, it exploded, known as the Big Bang. And now we are at our own.
My opinions seems pretty crazy, but that's what I think.

There are many theories, the most logical one to me says we cannot know until we have a different concept of math and physics. Going backward in time, we can go back to a point billionths of a second after the Big Bang. To go back to the point where time = 0, scientists must become philosophers. The problem is that math and physics are 'products' of the Big Bang. At the time of the Big Bang and before, math and physics did not exist.

The nothing before time zero had to be a potential and the potential had to be finite.
The universe is the beginning of an incident.
The potential has to be there and it had to be finite or it couldn't;t have produced the space-time pulse that was the beginning of our universe.
The universe is a finite entity,one day it will go out of existence,there will be nothing again but with a difference.
The nothing at the end of the universe will have no potential and it will be in a state of eternal nothing and it will never occur again.

Simply nothing. Big Bang Theory is simply the birth of the universe. Nothing happened before the formation of Mesons, Weakons, Gluons, Gravitons, Hyperons, Fermions, Bosons, Baryons, Neutrons, Protons, Hadrons, Nucleons, Tauon, Muon, Positrons, Electrons, Neutrinos, Quarks and Leptons

Nothing, as far as anyone or thing in the universe is concerned. There has been no timescale before the Big Bang. And the initial matter didn't just evolve on its own. A higher power implemented it.
