Shaking hands is not used between people of radically different status, but between socially equal people, friends or businessman.

Many Chinese consider winking to be rude.

If you are young, when you meet someone older you should lower your head and bend slightly to show respect.

When you use one of your fingers to scrape your face looking at somebody the corresponding verbal expression may be said to be "Shame on you!

Chinese tend to smile more easily than westerners when they feel difficulty or embarrassment. Smile because of embarrassment by an Chinese might be interpreted as being friendly by a westerner, but really they are embarrassed.

Prolonged eye contact when greeting the Chinese for the first time is a mark of disrespect. Chinese tend to avoid direct eye-contact in face-to-face interaction out of respect while they might be perceived as not paying attention or even disrespectful by westerners. They do not like direct eye-contact from you either and they might thing you are being disrespectful.

Asians in general have a smaller sphere of personal space than westerners. With different expectations of personal space, a Chinese speaking to an American might find that he or she is trying to keep a distance while on the other hand the American might feel that the Chinese is intruding into his or her personal space.

Collectivism vs. Individualism

• In general, the Chinese are a collective society with a need for group affiliation, whether to their family, school, work group, or country.
• In order to maintain a sense of harmony, they will act with decorum at all times and will not do anything to cause someone else public embarrassment.
• They are willing to subjugate their own feelings for the good of the group.
• This is often observed by the use of silence in very structured meetings. If someone disagrees with what another person says, rather than disagree publicly, the person will remain quiet. This gives face to the other person, while speaking up would make both parties lose face.

This isn't much , but I learned from having many Chinese immigrants as insurance clients , that many of them will laugh ( a subdued laugh) when they are at a loss for words, or don't want to offend w an inappropriate response to a proposal. ( An associate who is Chinese explained this dynamic to me)

Aside from that I know paying attention & making eye contact are considered expressions of respect.
