I'm not sure how much your friend's daughter will get out of P&P, but it's certainly appropriate for her to read. On the surface, it's a giant love story, so it may indeed interest a 14-year-old; however, like many other Austen works, it satirizes 18th century society. I say let the girl read it, and if she likes it, maybe she and mom can bond over the BBC TV adaptation.

It is EXCELLENT, excellent, excellent! An 18th Century novel of romance and wit! I can't commend your daughter enough for wanting to read a classic! I mean, it's Jane Austen! I know a million parents out there who wish they were in your shoes - give your daughter all the Austen books she wants. It's a rare day that I hear about someone young and willing to take on the literary greats and classics. Age-appropriate? Heck, Jane Austen's more "age-appropriate" than Harry Potter! To give you a taste, here's Amazon.com's review of it.

And a plot overview here http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/pride/summary.html

I'm not jokin'. The books a classic, the author's in the encyclopedia fer-Pete's-sake. http://www.bartleby.com/65/au/Austen-J.html

And it's on Sparknotes, too ( http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/pride/ ). You KNOW a book's great if people need a study guide to understand it.

Good-bye and good-luck! : )

PS I'm sure you've heard of the movie. But get her the book first. Don't whisper a word about the movie if she hasn't heard about it yet, because she ought to read the book FIRST. The two key buzz words when it comes to Pride and Prejudice are: Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy

It's My favorite Book and I have read it 3 times and watched the movie 2 times. The movie with Colin Firth is the best.

It is absolutely appropriate for your friends daughter.

In the beginning, it take time to get used to reading the English dialog.

My granddaughter has read it and is nuts about it. When she has to do a monologue for her drama class she always chooses excerpts from Pride and Prejudice.

You should read it yourself. You will love it and you will enjoy the play on words with the 5 girls father.and with his wife.

It is a classic and a must. Jane Austin is the author. I have 2 of her books that combines all her writing. I have 1 for a loaner and one that I won't part with.

There are Jane Austin Book clubs on the Internet.
She wrote in the 1800's.

I hope I'm not telling you more than you want to know.

It's a classic. There's no harm for her to read it. It's really proper, if you know what I mean.
Pride and Prejudice is a story about love. The subjects are Elizabeth Bennett's prejudice and Mr Darcy's pride that were initially in the way of their love, and how they overcame it.

pride and prejudice is about a country family with all girls in the late 1800s england. it is about the marriages and etiquette of that time. basically the mother wants to marry all of her daughters off well, and there are interesting plots that result from this. the main plot is the relationship between a very intelligent girl named elizabeth and a haughty stuck up man named mr. darcy. it is a very fun book and i would definitely recommend it for your daughter, i am 16 and enjoyed it very much, as do my aunts and mom.

hard to follow at first, but it's very good. it's a love story about a rich man whose prejudice gets in the way of his prideful love interest. The story focusses around the main character, Lizzie Bennet, her four sisters, Jane, Kitty, Lydia and Mary, Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Bingley. It is a very good read, I have read most of it and have seen the movie and enjoy them very much.

I love to read, and I'll tell you I'm probably in the minority, but I hated this book. It's vapid. But it should be okay for a 14 year old to read. It's much tamer than the stuff I read at 14. And lots of people love Jane Austen. Perhaps I'll give her another chance.

It's excellent. It will be a challenging read for her but if she is up to it, go for it. Pax - C.
