Back in the day before the lousiana purchase, Ohio was one of the westernmost states. therefore it still maintained some of its western status so it is called the mid-west.
also, most of the american population is situated on the east coast so it is the western part of the east coast area.

It goes back to much earlier times. At one time Ohio was part of the "Northwest Territory" and was the midwest. It has just carried on in terminology. Outdated in actuality, but as with other things just hangs on.

the Colonial times answers are correct.....Ohio, Indiana and Illinois were the "Northwest Territories" up to about 1815; that's why the university known as Northwestern is in Chicago, not Seattle

The answerers who say it dates back to Colonial times are correct.
As for the guy who says it's because of how they think, he seems to be painting large groups of people with the same brush. Midwesterners vary in intelligence and common sense just as much as the rest of the world.

Primarilly by default. Ohio doesn't belong to the "Northern states", nor to the "Eastern States", nor to the "Appalachian States".

I've heard its because of the way people in Ohio think. They think like midwesterners. They kind of ask silly questions.
