as long as they take responsibility for their failures also then I imagine they could claim their successes and thank themselves

As an atheist, I have to say that's a pretty good question, partly because I think an attitude of gratitude is very important to happiness and acheivement. I don't thank anybody, but I definitely feel grateful.

Somehow I can't imagine an atheist being grateful for anything.

Me. I am like a god to them. I built a meeting hall for atheists, but no one came. They didn't believe it existed.
