Originally lead was used to write on paper because it is soft enough to 'smudge.' Today, pencil lead is made of a mixture of wax, clay and graphite which is very soft. The mixture is formed then heated to drive off the wax. Hard lead has more clay than soft lead.

Pencils use graphite, ... actually a combination of graphite and clay.

Graphite is carbon.
