Buy a simple guitar chord book having some music theory in it. Start slow, read carefully, and digest each piece of instruction.
Learn the chords that are moveable, better known as the chords in the Chromatic Scale, i.e., as in F major in the first fret, but in the second fret the formation is F# major.
A guitar teacher with one-on-one instruction is the best way to go initially. If money precludes such extravagance, find a guitar-playing friend who is willing to show you techniques of chord forming, strumming, and holding a beat, mindful of habits that may be good or bad.
Learn music theory as you learn chords, their progressions, and names.
Once you've moved beyond the hurting fingertips you will be on your way to improved playing. Remember, you're training your hands and fingers to do things they are unaccustomed to doing. It takes practice continuously to the point that you live for the guitar during the first two years of playing.
Last, treat your guitar better than you would your own body.

http://www.guitartricks.com is where I learned. They have all different styles to choose from. The forum there is cool too. You can ask anything about guitar and the guys there always have a good answer.
If you've never picked up a guitar before look at this page first. http://www.guitartricks.com/guide.php

Get a Learn to Play guitar DVD. Those are cool because you can pause, rewind, do it as often as you want, and hear how it sounds!
