Elvis may be the king but the Beatles are the masters!

Elvis taught the Beatles everything they ever knew! He was the King of Rock and Roll... and still is today... Too bad he died so young! Everyone from the time of the 50's and 60's knows it was always Elvis... then the Beatles came across the ocean and learned from the teacher! They are awesome too, and their music does live on... but their group literally fell apart! But then, what group hasn't at some point? It's life!

The best answer is neither-- The real kings of rock and roll are the ooold Mississippi delta bluesmen. T-Bone Walker, "Blind" Willie Johnson, Bukka White, Skip James, and especially Muddy Waters, who would later go on to define the Blues in the midwest, all played some of the most important roles in the transition into Rock and Roll. Artists through the 70's and 80's were still covering songs from the unique Delta Blues style. Take Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying," for example: it's held in wide regard as a keystone among blues-rock tracks, though few know it is a cover based on a Blind Willie tune.

The same is true of many of folk legend Bob Dylan's popular blues and folk tracks, including his "Fixin' to Die Blues," originally recorded by the aforementioned Bukka White. If you're a fan of rock and roll, folk, or really almost any contemporary musical style, then you can't go wrong with turning the hands on the clock back a little farther and getting into some of the early blues artists, because they played a far more influential part than most casual music listeners would ever realize. =D
