I don't know before or after, but right now I know Widow Douglas is reading him parts of the bible so Huck can learn some proper school stuff.

It seems like the boy has finally been forced into submission and is now grudgingly sitting out his lesson. He sits impatiently, ocassionally whining about how he could better spend his time. The matron is impatient and won't have her pupil trying to derail her teachings with ill-mannered behavior. She gives him a look that would make any other student squirm. The look of contempt bounces between the two and becomes a virtual tennis match -- neither willing to settle for "love", for no two foes, before today, had ever hated with such fervor. No two wits were ever so evenly matched...

okay basically Huck is giving in.

normally he is the outgoing wildchild..would never wear fancy clothes moreorless shoes, goes by his own morals and conscious, believes in God..but not religions.

Huck has basically been tamed by circumstance...if he wants a family..then he has to be part of that family..which includes taking baths, reading the bible, following rules..

he basically is the average college single guy..free to do as he pleases..he can drink out of the milk carton if he wants..he can wear the same smelly clothes or leave pizza boxes all around the apartment..

but when he gets a girlfriend or married..he has to conform..he has to clean up..obey rules...stop thinking about himself and group think more..he has to consider others..he probably will go back to chuch etc

Huck got in trouble and Widow Douglas is "punishing" him by reading him the Bible. She is trying to get him to change his ways.

Huck is being punished. The widow is reading him the bible, and he is bored to death.
