I want to buy an mp3 player for listening to music, but mainly to record the voice of someone speaking another language I am learning (maybe 5 minutes at a time), for later listening to through the same device. I believe the recording format is different to mp3 - how does the memory per unit of time compare to mp3 (as there is a lot of info on how much mp3 music these devices will hold)? I am looking at the iriver T30 http://www.iriver.com/html/product/prpa_product.asp?pidx=73 . How much memory should I get?

All basic formats, including MP3, AAC, and WMA, have variable bitrates, which determine the quality of audio. AAC in iTunes defaults to 128kbps, though that would really only matter if you're getting an iPod. MP3 usually defaults (depending on the encoding software) to 128-192kbps, which would run equal to or larger than a standard AAC file of the same runtime. WMA as encoded by Windows Media Player also defaults to 128kbps. Regardless, you'll be using less than 10MB per minute at any standard recording rate, so a dinky little 64MB player would almost suffice, if it was empty of all files except for the firmware.

The big use of space will actually come from the songs. Consider that every 5-minute song that you upload will also use up about 5-7MB of capacity, plus you'll lose some to the firmware off the top (something has to tell the player how to operate, after all). 1GB of capacity is good for about 15-20 CDs, on average, or about 16 hours of runtime at 128kbps. That's good enough to last you for a long drive or a cross-country flight, but it'll get very repetitive if you listen to it at work. I'd suggest going for a minimum of 4-5GB of capacity, if possible.

I would say the 1 GB, the format is probably .wmv which uses about 2 mb more than an mp3, so this way u can record what you need and still get a good mix of regular songs, if you dont want to spend a lot a 512 mb is also good, just have fewer songs to listen too
