French are extremely rude to english speaking Americans when they visit France. Why? What did Americans do to deserve this?

They don't hate Americans. They are very chauvinistic about their language and they resent that their language has been supplanted by English as the world language, and that resentment is what you're feeling. However, my experience is that the only Americans who find French to be rude are those who are rubes and act so, i.e. not bothering to learn a phrase or two and expecting everyone to kowtow to them. Act respectfully - as a guest in their country - and they are very nice to you.

"English speaking Americans". LOL!!!

I've been to France, and was never treated badly at all. Mind you I was actually respectful of their culture and managed to use a few French phrases while I was there (that's what they speak there you know).

Try to say at least one or two French phrases while in a country that actually speaks French, and you'll be treated with courtesy and kindness, as most appreciate the fact that even though you may be butchering their language, you're trying.

Plus, let me guess. You were in Paris. Paris is a huge city, with a big city attitude. Not a good representation of France as a whole. Kinda like a Frenchman visiting New York, finding that some New Yorkers are abrasive and up front, then drawing a conclusion that America is rude. Not really fair, not really true.

At one time France was the leading center of western civilization. They once were the rulers of England. Diplomats spoke French around the world. So when England became the dominant power replacing French as the universal language they felt miffed. It became a cultural habit to look down on the English language. I ask a son of a French diplomat why the French act this way. And he said he didn't know. He said they treated him the same way because he had traveled. He was a native french man and spoke fluent french. Go figure. I think it is a cultural attitude not a sign of contempt.

First of all, French don't hate Americans as a whole. They hate the American government.
Second, French people are not rude. Just go to the supermarket and you'll hear the women at the cash and the customers say "Hello, here you are, thank you, have a nice day". It's called courtesy and is very appreciated...
Due to this, when American people come to us without saying "Hello" or "Pardon me" and yelling directly in English without asking if we speak the language, we don't feel like being nice. In Paris it is worse, since there are as many tourists as locals. Moreover, Paris isn't France, it's just a part of it and not the best one (I must admit that people from Paris are not very kind).
When an American comes to me asking for his way, as long as he is polite, I smile and I try to do my best to help. If he dares at me and behaves as if he were at home asking his buddy for a beer, I'm not so willing...
I'm sure that American tourists that try to be polite and not to yell all the time are better treated, just try to see... I call it respect.

While USA is banning smoking everywhere, French are behind. After visiting there because Airfare was cheap, I discovered a beautiful (dirty urban areas) country loaded with pompous arrogant unfriendly people who are generally uneducated in anything not French and magnificent food!

They suffer from a superiority complex to the 10th power. I was with a Dutch person who knew French and they were a bit nicer to him. Dutch schools teach many languages for the countries around them. French teach nothing but French. French are not fond of British either. It's not personal, its ignorance.

The supposition that united states of america of america is loose through fact of France is particularly defective. One would desire to desire to invite why might a monarchy furnish help to revolutionairies attempting to overthrow a monarchy soley based upon the hunt for freedom? the respond, simplified is they'd not. Bragging rights and wealth have been the perpetuating motives. And therin, the French hate human beings through fact they have been given neither.

Some French have always been a bit disdainful, but I can't help but think that our behavior in the runup to the Iraq was has not been particularly charitable - for instance, blaming the French as "surrender monkeys" and renaming french fries and french toast and whatnot as freedom fries, etc.... some of our government has been absolutely insulting to the French, given that they used to be one of our strongest allies.

By the way, do you know the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France? It was.

Older French citizens love America. We were the Liberators. Young French are a bit uneducated and very ungrateful.

No idea, though we saved their asses in 2 wars, helped them during Napoleans rule with the Louisianna Purchase while they reluctantly helped us in 1 war and gave us a huge statue.
