Lions that live in Asia were discovered sooner than those in Africa and were called King of the Jungle because they live in the Jungles of Asia. However soon after the Tiger was discovered and is even more imposing than the lion but the lion was able to keep the title as King of the Jungle.

Lions once had a much wider range than they do in "modern" times. They were as far North and east of Africa as China. There were many jungles between the Cape and the China sea.
The reason they have bred Ligers in present times is that they already had proof that Lions and Tigers shared ranges and they had crossbred before.

Because there are jungles in Africa and lions may have lived in them. Also, lions are ferocious predators, and cats have always seemed slightly royal; therefore it is only logical to refer to lions as 'kings.'
